Ethan Ampadu is another one of Chelsea’s bright youth talents who has had very limited game time under Maurizio Sarri this season.
Regardless, the young Welshman has continued to attract concrete interest from some clubs due to his talent and versatility on the pitch.
Ethan Ampadu has had just about 200 minutes of action under Maurizio Sarri, although he has been representing the Welsh senior team already.
In spite of this, Chelsea are not prepared to let the 18-year old leave the club on a loan move in January despite his lack of game time this season.
Championship side, Derby County, being managed by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard had expressed interest in the player. However, his advances for the youngster were rebuffed.
Frank Lampard revealed in a chat with The Telegraph: “We have asked, but I don’t think he’s leaving Chelsea. He can play in a few positions, that’s why he would be so valuable to anybody and why he’s staying at Chelsea.”
Ampadu got a rare start in the FA Cup game against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and impressed in the midfield role he was assigned on the day.
Speaking after the game, the youngster expressed satisfaction with the chance he got although he pointed out the unfamiliarity of the position he was assigned.
“I enjoyed it. It’s nice being back out there on the pitch in front of the home fans. It was tough playing in that position for the first time this year but I’m just grateful to get minutes.
“I’ve been training in that position for the last couple of weeks. Obviously we’ve had a few injuries haven’t we so I’ve slotted in there in training and I guess when you try and train well you hope the manager can see that. You’re got to stay focused, stay sharp for whenever the chances come. You’ve got to train and prepare in case something does happen so you can fit in.”
“It’s always about the next game but when you think of the bigger picture, and the bigger targets, you want to win everything. Obviously we won [the FA Cup] last season so we want to try and defend it. I was injured last time so I didn’t get to be involved so hopefully I can be a bit more involved this year.”
Hopefully, we get to see him feature more under Maurizio Sarri as the season progresses
